Japanese Courtyard Garden in Sydenham
The lush green planting in our Japanese garden in Sydenham, offers a respite from the latest wave of heat.
Despite facing south-west, the clever potitioning of the multi stemmed cherry 'kojo no mai', acers and dwarf pines provide much needed shade.Â
Ferns and grasses surround the corten steel water bowl while Cosmos*, Japanese anemones and Erigeron add pops of colour.
In autumn the foliage turns brilliant yellow-orange and red, while the royal fern and Japanese forest grass take on a golden-brown tint. In winter, the bark and intricate branches of the cherry take centre stage while in spring it is abundant with white-pinkish flowers.
*Cosmos might seem like an unusual choice for a Japanese garden but unbeknownst to most it is a much loved annual in Japan with a later flowering season from September right through to late November, with plenty of 'akizakura' (autumn cherry blossom) viewing festivals.
